Meet the Musicians

Sara Cruz, originally from Brazil, started her musical studies at the Brasilia Conservatory of Music where she studied piano, choral studies, music theory and violin since the age of 8. She studied violin under Jorge Antunes, Daniel Marques and Egon Francisco de Mattos of the National Symphony Orchestra. At age 17 performed as soloist with the Camerata Noturna Chamber Orchestra and in 2011 was accepted into the School of Music at University of Brasilia where she studied under Nadia Vassileva Nedialkova and Glesse Collet. In 2012 she moved to the USA to study violin with acclaimed soloist Hye-jin Kim and now holds a B.A in Violin Performance from East Carolina University. She attended the 33rd Brasilia International Summer Festival and the Richard Luby Violin Festival at Chapel Hill. Sara now teaches privately in the Greenville area.

Laura started playing the violin in the 5th Grade Orchestra program for the Onslow County public schools in 2001. Around the same time she also started playing the piano. After winning many numerous piano competitions and getting into all-state orchestras in consecutive years she decided to double major in music education and viola performance at East Carolina University. She was asked to switch to the viola because she had experience on the instrument and more were violists were needed for the ECU Symphony Orchestra. Laura has attended music festivals in North Carolina, Wisconsin, and Virginia, and has performed in public masterclasses for distinguished teachers such as Xiao-Dong Wong, Maria Lambros, Hsin-Yun Huang, and Jessica Thompson. Laura has also performed for the Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival, "Next Generation Concert" series, under the direction of Ara Gregorian, for six consecutive semesters. Her violin and viola teachers include Joseph Walker, Melissa Reardon, and Hye-Jin Kim.
Laura is currently pursuing her masters in orchestral conducting and studies with Jorge Richter, and also studies viola with Hye-Jin Kim. After graduation she plans on teaching in in the public schools around the Northern Virginia area.
Andrew Jones, a current violist at East Carolina University’s School of Music, is in his fourth year towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance. He currently studies under Jorge Richter. Originally from Northern Virginia, he has been a member of the Virginia All-State Orchestra and the principle violist of the North Central Regional Orchestra. Jones was a member of the Youth Orchestra of Prince William County from age 10 to 18, rising through the program to become a member of the most advanced group, Youth Symphony Orchestra, at age 14. He has also performed in the East Carolina University Four Season Chamber Music Festival “Next Generation Concert Series” under the direction of Ara Gregorian. Previous teachers include Patty Plombon with masterclass opportunities with Amadi Azikiwe and Helen Fall. He aspires to continue his education after his undergraduate degree towards a Master of Music in Viola Performance and perform in a professional orchestra.
